Most BIS delays we see aren't caused by the product failing a test — they're caused by documentation gaps that surface late, after an application is already in motion. Here are the five that come up most often.
1. Filing under the wrong standard version
Indian Standards get revised, and BIS applications must reference the current version. An application built against a superseded standard gets sent back for correction, which costs real weeks, not days.
2. Incomplete factory layout documentation
Auditors expect a factory layout that matches what they see on the day of the visit — machinery, process flow, and in-house test equipment included. A layout diagram that's a few years out of date is one of the fastest ways to trigger follow-up queries.
3. Missing raw material traceability
Several standards require documented traceability from raw material to finished product. If this isn't already part of your quality process, retrofitting it after the application is filed is far slower than building it in before you apply.
4. Inconsistent product labeling across documents
The product name, model number, and specifications should match exactly across the application form, test reports, and factory documentation. Small inconsistencies — a model number typo, a spec sheet that lists a different voltage rating — routinely trigger clarification requests.
5. No named point of contact for the factory audit
BIS audits move faster when one person at the factory can answer questions on production process, quality control, and record-keeping without needing to check with someone else. Naming that person — and briefing them beforehand — is a small step that measurably shortens audit day.

Every one of these is a documentation and process issue, not a product quality issue. Catching them before filing, rather than during the audit, is usually the difference between an 8-week approval and a 12-week one.
